Storytelling

Finding the little points of light, strung together.

Stories from an adapted life — honest, hopeful, and human. Not a guide, just a reminder that you’re not alone.

I believe in people. I know they can do amazing things despite adversity. Sometimes physical barriers get in the way. Often we get in our own way.

I have learned a lot of things living an adapted existence over the last 20 years. I often write to my 30-year old self. Newly diagnosed with a disease that was going to be life-altering. I had a bleak view of my future. I felt like all of my hard work up to that point had been a waste. Of time. Of energy.
I had no idea that there could be another way to live besides the pursuit of a high-paying job with an important title that allowed you to buy things. Things that were supposed to add meaning to your life.
My writing is not a guide on how to live your life guide. I share stories about things that have happened or are happening to me. It is not meant to be overly positive, because there have been plenty of faceplants (literally and figuratively), stubbed toes, embarrassing events, failures. Moments when there wasn’t a rock big enough for me to crawl under.
I share some of these stories. Not to make people nervous. Just to let them know that they are not alone. Some of us know what you are feeling. Embarrassment. Anger. Despair. Hopelessness. But there are little points of light that exist that you can string together to find your way in the darkness. They are there. Mostly hidden to start, but they are there.
The written stories I share are intended to show how one guy dug out of a big frigging hole. You can live a meaningful life despite barriers that emerge. You can be a good spouse, dad, business leader, or community ambassador. It just looks different than you imagined. Not worse. Just different. I hope that by me sharing my personal experiences a spark can be lit in you so you can live the best existence possible.
